Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought

forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in

liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men

are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing

whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so

dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great

battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a

portion of that field as a final resting-place for

those who here gave their lives that that nation might

live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we

should do this. But in a larger sense, we cannot

dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this

ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled

here have consecrated it far above our poor power to

add or detract. The world will little note nor long

remember what we say here, but it can never

forget what they did here. It is for us the living

rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work

which they who fought here have thus far so nobly

advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to

the great task remaining before us -- that from these

honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause

for which they gave the last full measure of devotion--

that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not

have died in vain, that this nation under God shall

have a new birth of freedom, and that government

of the people, by the people, for the people shall

not perish from the earth.

87년 전에 우리의 선조들은 만인은 태어나면서부터 평등

하다는 대전제에 헌정할 뜻에서 자유의 깃발 아래 이 대륙

에 신생국을 창설했습니다.

오늘 우리는 이 나라가, 또는 이렇게 창안되고 이렇게 헌

정된 어떤 나라가 과연 오래도록 지속될 수 있는지를 시험

하기 위하여 큰 내란을 겪고 있습니다.

우리는 전쟁이 크게 벌어졌던 싸움터에 지금 만나고 있습

니다.

우리는 이 나라를 영원히 지키기 위하여 이곳에서 목숨

을 바쳤던 사람들의 마지막 휴식처 가 되도록 이 싸움터의

한 부분을 헌정하기 위해 왔습니다.

우리가 이런 일을 하는 것은 적절하고 합당한 것입니다.

그러나 더 큰 의미에서 우리는 이 땅을 헌정할 수도 없고

봉납할 수도 없고 거룩하게도 할 수 없습니다.

생존자이건 사망자이건 이곳에서 싸웠던 용사들이 이미

이 땅을 신성하게 했기 때문에 우 리의 빈약한 힘으로는 도

저히 헌정을 가감할 수가 없습니다.

세상은, 우리가 이곳에서 드리는 추도사를 주목하지 않

을 것이거니와 오래 기억하지도 않 을 것입니다.

그러나 사람들은 용사들이 이곳에서 이룩해 놓았던 업적

을 영원히 잊지 않을 것입니다.

그러므로 이곳에서 싸웠던 사람들이 그처럼 탁월하게 진

척해 놓은 그 미완성의 작업을 모두 마치기 위하여 이곳에

서 몸을 바쳐야 하는 것은 오히려 생존자인 우리들입니다.

우리 자신 스스로 이곳에서 우리 앞에 남아 있는 대과업

에 헌신해야 하겠습니다. 즉 명 예롭게 죽은 용사들로부터

우리는 가중된 헌신을 받아들이고 있는 바, 그것은 그들이

최종 적인 발전의 단계를 충분히 마련해 놓았던 그 대의를

위한 것입니다.

우리는 이곳에서 그들의 죽음이 헛되이 돌아가지 않으리

라는 굳은 결의를 하는 것이며, 하나님의 가호 밑에서 나라

가 자유의 새로운 탄생을 누리게 하리라는 것과,

국민의 국민에 의한 국민을 위한 정부가 지구상에서 멸망

하지 않으리라는 굳은 결의를 하는 바입니다.
